Gemini for Small Business: What the New Tools Can Actually Do
On Oct 20, 2026 Google gave Gemini a small business hub that connects to Shopify, Xero, Google Ads and more. Here's what an owner can actually hand to it this week, and what it still won't do.

So Google did something this week that a lot of small shop owners are going to bump into soon, probably without reading the announcement. Gemini now has a small business hub. You can hook it up to Shopify, Xero, Google Ads, your Google Business Profile and a bunch of other apps, and then ask it to do real work in them.
The short answer on whether it matters: yes, a bit. It can pull your orders and sales numbers, add products, set up discount codes, read your books and draft the boring stuff. It can't refund anyone, it can't touch your live theme, and anything that changes your money waits for you to say yes. Think of it as a helper that does the looking up and the first drafts, and you still sign off.
What Google actually announced
Vishnu Sivaji, who runs the Gemini app at Google, posted about it on October 20, 2026. There's a new business landing page inside Gemini. From there you can work on your brand, look at your finances and dig into customer stuff.
It connects to Google's own tools, so Business Profile, Ads and Workspace. And to outside apps too. Google lists Adobe, Canva, Dropbox, Shopify, Wix, Zoho and Xero.
There are two other pieces. You can upload your website, brand kit, fonts or colours, and Gemini keeps that style around so the images it makes for you match your brand without you re-uploading everything each time. And it can take messy spreadsheets, receipts and purchase records and turn them into charts and simple models.
Google says it's rolling out over the coming days to Gemini app users globally. But Martin Ashmere at Search Engine Watch pointed out on October 21 that the announcement doesn't spell out what each connection needs in terms of subscription or usage, and that some earlier Gemini business features skipped the EEA and the UK. So check your own account before you plan around it. That goes for us in Canada too, honestly.
Why this one is worth your time
There's a new AI tool every week. I get it. Most of them you can ignore.
This one is a little different because it lives inside an app lots of people already have, and it plugs into the tools a small business actually runs on. You don't need to set up anything fancy or pay a developer to try it. You connect Shopify or Xero, approve the access, and start asking.
And it's an AI agent in the plain sense of the word. It doesn't just answer questions from what it knows. It goes into your store or your books and does stuff.
What it can do in your Shopify store
Shopify has a help page for the Gemini connector. It's pretty detailed, and it's the best place to see what's real. Here are the bits I'd actually use.
Checking orders and sales
You can ask for your recent orders and it lists them with the customer, totals, and payment and fulfillment status, up to 50 at a time. You can open one order to see the items, shipping address and tracking. It reads orders only. It doesn't change them.
For numbers, you can ask things like total sales for the last 30 days by product, or your average order value this month compared to last month. It gives you tables and charts. Shopify's tip is to ask one short question at a time, because a big layered question can fail or come back hard to read.
Products, collections and stock
You can create a product with a title, price and variants, and it'll write a description if you don't give it one. You can update titles, descriptions, images, prices and SKUs. You can build a collection, like a holiday gifts page with your three bestsellers, and you can check or set stock counts at a location.
Bulk changes are where to be careful. It changes items one at a time, so a big batch can stop halfway through. If that happens you finish it in your Shopify admin.
Discount codes
It can make percentage-off codes for the whole store, certain products or a collection. It won't do fixed-amount discounts and it won't edit codes you already have.
What it won't do
This part is reassuring, I think. Per Shopify, a connected AI tool can't issue refunds, cancel or capture orders, mark orders paid, process returns or mess with gift cards, even if you give it write access. It can't edit or publish your live theme. It can't change your plan, payments, taxes or domains. And it can only read your data unless you approve write access.
(Small side note. This is about you running your store with an agent. Shoppers using agents to buy from you is a different thing, and we covered that in our post on Shopify AI shopping agents.)
What it can do with your books
Xero announced its Gemini connection on October 14, 2026. With it you can ask for a profit and loss, see your cash position, find overdue balances, flag overdue bills and get charts of things like aged receivables.
Xero also says a "tasks" feature is coming for eligible plans. The examples are a daily summary of pending bills and cash, or using Xero and Gmail together to prepare follow-ups on overdue invoices. That's coming soon, not here yet.
And anything that changes your financial data, like sending an invoice or a payment reminder, needs you to confirm it first. Xero also says your data isn't used to train Gemini models.
A few real tasks to try first
If you want to test it without much risk, here's where I'd start.
Monday morning, ask it for last week's sales by product and which items are low on stock. That's read only, and it's the kind of thing you'd normally click around for ten minutes to find.
Before a promo, have it draft the product descriptions or build the collection, then open your admin and look it over before anything goes live. A theme or a product set to draft is a safe place for it to work.
Once a week, ask Xero what's overdue, both money owed to you and bills you owe. Then you decide who to chase.
For marketing, upload your brand colours and fonts once and ask for a few social images for a new product. You'll still want to pick through them. But it beats starting from a blank canvas.
Keep it on a short leash
A few habits that'll save you some grief.
Start with read only access and only add write access once you trust it. Connect it through a staff account that has just the permissions it needs, since Shopify says access also depends on the account it acts through. Ask for one task at a time. And always check the result in your Shopify admin or in Xero before you rely on it, especially for anything that doesn't have a named action, like pages or menus.
You can switch the connection off in your Gemini connected apps settings whenever you want, which is good to know.
If you'd like the bigger picture on where agents fit in a small team, we wrote a longer piece on AI agents for small business.
FAQ
Is Gemini good for small business?
It can be, mostly as a helper. On October 20, 2026 Google added a small business hub to Gemini that connects to tools like Shopify, Xero, Google Ads and your Google Business Profile. It can pull your orders and sales numbers, add products, set up discount codes and read your books. You still check its work and sign off.
Does Gemini work with Shopify?
Yes. With Shopify's Gemini connector it can list your recent orders, show sales by product, create and update products, build collections and make percentage-off discount codes. It can't issue refunds, cancel orders, process returns or edit your live theme, even if you give it write access. And it only reads your data until you approve write access.
Can Gemini read my books in Xero?
Yes, through the Gemini connection Xero announced on October 14, 2026. You can ask for a profit and loss, see your cash position, find overdue balances and get charts of things like aged receivables. Anything that changes your financial data, like sending an invoice or a payment reminder, needs you to confirm it first. Xero also says your data isn't used to train Gemini models.
Is the Gemini small business hub available in Canada?
Google says it's rolling out over the coming days to Gemini app users globally. But Search Engine Watch pointed out that the announcement doesn't spell out what each connection needs in terms of subscription or usage, and that some earlier Gemini business features skipped the EEA and the UK. So check your own account before you plan around it.
If you want help setting it up
A lot of owners will be fine doing this on their own. But if you'd rather have someone set up AI agents for small business that fit how you actually work, with the right permissions and checks, that's the kind of thing we do. And if your Shopify store needs cleanup first, our ecommerce work covers that side.
