AI consultant in Canada, based in Montreal

I'm Tom Cobb. I help small and mid-sized businesses find where AI actually saves time, then build it into the tools they already run. No slide decks: a scoped workflow, something that works, and a team that knows how to use it.

What an AI consultant actually does

An AI consultant looks at how your business runs day to day, finds the repetitive computer work that AI can take on safely, and builds it. The useful version isn't a strategy report. It's sitting with a messy process, finding where the hours go, and leaving behind something that still runs a month later.

For most of the businesses I talk to, that means support replies, product and catalog upkeep, recurring reports, or the copy-paste between two systems that someone does every afternoon. Judgment, creative and growth decisions stay with your team.

How a project works

  1. Audit. We look at the workflow, the tools around it and the data it touches. On an online store, that includes a conversion (CRO) review.
  2. Separate. We split the work that needs a person from the repetitive work an AI stack can carry.
  3. Build. I ship the agent or automation inside the tools you already use, with a person approving what matters, then hand over the docs and train the team.

It starts with a free 30-minute call. The scope, price and timeline are confirmed in writing before any work begins.

Built for Quebec: French and Law 25

If you sell to customers in Quebec, whatever touches them has to work in French as well as English, and the French has to read like a person wrote it. If the workflow handles personal information about people in Quebec, Law 25 applies too, whatever the size of the business. Both go into the scope on day one, not after launch.

I cover this in more detail in AI consultant in Montreal: what SMBs should know. It's general information, not legal advice.

Remote, or in Montreal

Most of my work happens over video calls and shared screens, which is how I work with businesses elsewhere in Canada. Being in Montreal helps when a process is easier to understand in person, or when the team needs training in French.

Already know the work is agents? See AI agents for small business. Running an online store? Start with eCommerce conversion and Shopify AI.

Based in Montreal. I work with businesses in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil and across Quebec, and remotely elsewhere in Canada.

AI consulting: frequently asked questions

What is an AI consultant?

Someone who helps a business decide where AI is worth using, then puts it to work. A good one spends more time on your process than on the technology: where the hours go, which steps need a person, and what has to stay private. You should end up with something that runs, not a report.

How much does an AI consultant cost in Canada?

Published 2026 guides put most independent consultants and boutiques in Canada between roughly $150 and $450 an hour, and small fixed-price projects often land between $5,000 and $15,000. My Starter engagement, for one workflow, starts at $2,500 CAD. Larger or multi-workflow projects are priced after a free 30-minute consultation. My blog post on AI consultant costs in Canada breaks down the market ranges.

Do I need to be in Montreal to work with you?

No. I'm based in Montreal and work with businesses in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil and across Quebec, and remotely with teams elsewhere in Canada. Most of the work happens over video calls and shared screens.

Do we need clean data or a technical team first?

No. Most first projects start from the tools you already pay for, like your store, inbox, spreadsheets or CRM. Part of the audit is checking what the workflow needs and what it can safely touch. If something has to be fixed first, you'll know before you sign.

Who owns the accounts and the data?

Your company. Tools and accounts should be in your name, not mine, and the scope says where your data is processed. If personal information about people in Quebec is involved, Law 25 is part of the plan from the start.
